Static gems are always in effect once slotted. They do not have an entry for variable bonuses to-hit. Most of the time these will do the job just fine.

Variable gems are always in effect once slotted. They do not have an entry for static bonuses to-hit. Use for these is likely a bit rare.
Variable (Has a to-hit modifier with a value that varies from moment to moment)
These don't affect anything once slotted, instead they are toggled on or off after being slotted. They have all entries available, so if the other two aren't working this one will.
Conditional (Has a modifier with a value that only applies if certain conditions are met)
This choice is purely aesthetic. Gems created if you select Boon will be green and gems created if you select Bane will be red. It's a handy way of color-coding your gems so you can tell them apart at a glance!

Here you can declare what 'type' of bonus to hit, damage, or stats your gem is giving you. Note that only Untyped or Circumstance bonuses will stack with eachother. If, for example, you have a +3 enhancement bonus to hit from one gem and a +5 enhancement bonus to hit from another gem only the highest bonus (+5 in this case) will be applied.

Additional Notes:
If you write a description for your gem you'll be able to see it when you hover over it later, making it also good if you want to note any misc. effects such as haste which gives you some bonuses to saves and extra movement as well as that +1 to-hit.
